Road to Recovery | Raymond's Story
March 1, 2023
On January 31, 2023, Raymond White suffered a stroke causing immobility on his left side. After being treated at a Charleston hospital, he considered his options for rehab, certain that it would not occur at the hospital he was about to leave.
His son contacted Tonya Crum, Director of Acute Inpatient Rehab at Logan Regional Medical Center (LRMC), and to his surprise, he was soon being transferred to the inpatient rehabilitation unit at LRMC. Raymond was greeted by his nurse, Terri Cantrell and nursing assistant Rebecca Osborne and said he couldn’t help but notice the cleanliness of the facility.
“My wife and I felt like we had left the Motel 6 and moved into the Presidential Suite of the Hilton Plaza,” he recalled.
On Monday, February 6, Raymond began therapy with the team he would work with for the next two weeks: Andy Toler, Director of Rehabilitation, Krysta Kemp-Bowens, Occupational Therapist, and Alyssa Adkins, Speech Therapist. They worked with him for at least three hours each day helping him regain strength, coordination, and mobility so that he could one day return home and resume the activities of everyday life.
“I must say God blessed me with the best – the rehab was great,” Raymond said. “During my therapy I noticed how the other therapists worked with their patients and thought how blessed it is to have such caring and professional people working at Logan Regional Medical Center Rehabilitation to assist in the rehab of their patients. Not only did I receive the best therapy, but I also received great care from each RN and CNA that walked in my room.
“My wife made the comment that they should train nurses at other hospitals on how to care for patients,” he added. “The kindness, thoughtfulness, and loving attitude shown, not only to me but all patients, was definitely noticed.”
After two weeks of inpatient rehabilitation, Raymond exited LRMC able to walk (aided by his home walker), climb stairs, move his arm and fingers, and show much improvement in his speech and facial appearance, all thanks to the work of his therapists. They left such a positive impression that Raymond said he would commute 90 minutes each way to continue his recovery by participating in outpatient rehabilitation services at LRMC.
“I know I will receive the best care at LRMC outpatient rehabilitation,” he said.
